What is Speech Pathology?

A speech pathologist is trained in the assessment and management of communication, feeding and swallowing disorders.

Speech pathologists can be beneficial for the following conditions:

  • Palliative Care – end of life pathways related to dysphagia
  • Annual reviews – It is highly recommended all residents with an identified symptom or diagnosis of dysphagia, be assessed by the Speech Pathologist as least annually, or sooner if difficulties arise. This is best practice and satisfies obligations for meeting Accreditation Standards. Specialty training services for management of dysphagia and the implementation of the new IDDSI guidelines for texture modified food and thickened fluids.

How do I know if I have a swallowing problem/what is considered a swallowing problem?

A swallowing problem (medical term: dysphagia) is any problems swallowing, sucking, drinking, chewing, eating, controlling saliva, issues swallowing medication, issues keeping lips closed, dribbling, coughing regularly, gagging, choking, re-occurring lung infections/pneumonia.

Will my loved ones still be able to eat the foods they enjoy if they have a swallowing problem?

The ability to be able to keep eating the foods you enjoy if you have a swallowing problem is based on the type of swallowing problem and the severity. A speech pathologist with a holistic approach will consider all aspects and preferences of their client as part of the management plan.

Can a speech pathologist come to my home and help if I have problems with my speech?

Yes absolutely, we have a team of trained Speech pathologists who can identify your communication difficulties and recommended strategies and therapies.
